There has always been something comforting about…
The feeling of my fingers slipping over the angled top of my ear as I push my hair behind it.
Watching ripples in the bath from the water dripping off my fingertips.
Seeing the sparkle of a loved ones eye in an old photo and being able to remember the moment it was taken.
My child’s laugh.
A weighted glass as I lift it to my lips.
The crunch of fall leaves under my boots.
Clicking of heels as they cross the floor.
Being blinded by bright rays of light on a crisp cool day as my breath clouds the air.
Finding a word that means something more.
Secret symbols and special meanings.
Watching a flicker of understand on someones face when they learn something.
Being momentarily taller than someone I’m normally shorter than.
Feeling carbonation bubbles slide over my tongue and down my throat.
Liking my ass in my favorite pair of jeans
Reading a note from someone I love.
Tucking a note into a lunchbox.
The impossible hue of the sky some nights just before the sun dips away. And some mornings just as it rises.
My feet frozen and numb as I skirt the edge of the ocean.
Striped socks.
The comfort of my own pillow at the end of the day.
Little things that I’ve always noted, embraced and reveled in. Little things that I hold on to. Little things that I love and appreciate. And I love that about myself. That in the midst of chaos. Rapped up in a hellish day or week I can still stop and smile at something simple. That something small can make me happy. It’s a gift.
