are you my mother?

Mother’s Day in a global pandemic isn’t really looking fun and relaxing for me. As a mom I feel like I’m on triple duty right now. Quadruple duty. All the duties. Mired in working, parenting, managing a household in super weird times, being a partner, supporting my family and friends, and trying to keep myself sane.

I feel like I need a treat. In times of stress with things how they used to be, that’s what I would do. Take myself out for a manicure. A pedicure. Pick up some champagne, truffles. Have someone make me a very bougie meal. With an appetizer of fresh crab dipped in drawn lemon butter. And to wrap up the night a nice bourbon nightcap.

We can’t always get what we want though, right?

But you can get some of it. Better yet you can get some of it for the moms in your life. In typical Portland fashion, local PDX businesses are doing some pretty great things right now. You can support them and do something nice for a mom in your life at the same time. I’m sure there are sooooooo many more than I’m able to list here… so if you have a favorite locally owned business doing something special for the moms this Mother’s Day please add a link in comments.

But to give you a start if you haven’t done something for the moms in your life yet, here’s a list of my personal favorites. They’re all companies I’ve ordered from and will continue to again and again. They deliver locally in Portland AND are doing something special for the moms out there.

Sellwood Flower Company – If you don’t show delivery available to the address you’re entering on the site, try calling the shop. They offer extended delivery areas at a reasonable charge. They also have chocolate, truffles, macarons, champagne, plants, and other treats. Yes… I’ve had plants delivered from them during the pandemic. My house will be a jungle soon.

Freeland Spirits– Local, woman owned and operated distillery that makes some awesome liquor. Gin, geneva, and bourbon. Those are all available for delivery but in addition they’re doing some lovely Mother’s Day bundles that include flowers and treats from other woman owned local businesses! Plus every order comes with their distillery made hand sanitizer.

Reverend Nat’s Cider – Rev Nat’s has been a staple in our household for a while, but now that they offer delivery, we always have some on hand. They have two different Mother’s Day specific offerings that include flowers and cider. They also have a cider called “Shoot the Glass” that’s a tribute to Alan Rickman in Die Hard… what mother doesn’t love Alan Rickman?

Olympia Provisions  – Meat, cheese, wine, chocolate, flowers. You can find them all for local delivery. Their Saucisson Sec salami is ahhhmazing.

Tilde – My absolute favorite Portland Boutique is woman owned and operated Tilde in Sellwood. They have a huge Mother’s Day sale every year and this year is no different. 20% off everything in stock. This year they’re also donating 10% of sales to the Oregon Food Bank. The shipping deadline is today for Oregon, but they’re doing local Portland delivery this Friday and Saturday to make sure those gifts get to the moms in your life.

And because you made it all the way to the end… here’s a glamor shot from the 90s of my own mother, Nana Kaos, with my brother and me…
