35 minutes…

I’m not a new year’s resolution kind of girl. I don’t want to be a new year’s resolution kind of girl. I like to think that if you know you should make a change in your life you should change it. Then and there. But as a time of reflection the new year makes sense. It’s a reset of sorts. So I decided to choose something simple to focus on. To adhere to. Something achievable. And more importantly maintainable.

The idea of that new year reset really appealed to me and made me wonder what else I can hit reset on. Fitness and dietary goals are lofty and something I am constantly working toward anyway. No good. What did I have the time, the will, and the ability to do? How could I make change without spending a bunch of money on new gear that will fall be the wayside as soon as I realize I’m not into inflatable sumo suit wrestling, in-line skating, gardening, or metal working.

Time. It was the key. Working from home folks may think I have a lot of extra time. In a way I do. I don’t have that morning or evening commute. I don’t have to spend an hour doing my hair, applying makeup, and putting on the perfect outfit. But more often than not it means I just work straight through the day. Eyes on the screen. I have forced breaks when I drop my daughter off or pick her up from school and those are nice. I get a walk and some time to reconnect with her. But there’s a stretch of hours in between that I often entirely forget I’m a person. Sure there are days I go out for a long lunch. Or work from a coffee shop with friends around. Or… you know… work from the nail salon that has good wifi while treating myself to a pedicure. But those are sometimes. Somedays.

So my goal was time.

To make sure I take no less than 35 minutes away from my computer to eat lunch every workday. It’s not a lot. It’s a little. But I’ve managed to make it happen two days in a row so I’d say it’s a good start.

Anyone else doing something simple to make their everyday a little better?

I have this same struggle working from home. Sometimes I get into a groove, and sometimes I just can’t force myself to do the things I need to do for me. Right now I should be on the treadmill instead of reading FB. So that’s what I’m going to do. Good luck finding your time.
