I would think the saying, in your case, should say, “If you don’t know who you are talking to, don’t say anything at all.”

I myself have a habit of texting the wrong people as well. So I simply need to make sure I double check the message before it gets sent out.

There will come a day, though, when we send something of questionable morality (which I tend to do when I feel like bugging the wife while she is working) and its going to go to the wrong person.

Thats going to suck.

I have Twitter configured to send me a text message for updates from two or three close friends. If I’m not paying attention, the iPhone’s text app makes it difficult to differentiate between a text message from the person and a text message from Twitter on behalf of the person. Sometimes I respond to Twitter, which broadcasts a response that may or may not have been private to the world at large. I can delete it from Twitter fairly easily, but then have to remember to also delete it from the mirrors at FriendFeed and Facebook.

So… uhhh… yeay for messaging technology!… or something.
